Job Summary
Smurfit WestRock is seeking a highly skilled and hands-on Maintenance Manager to lead the maintenance, tooling, and engineering departments in our San Antonio facility. This role is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing preventative and predictive maintenance programs, ensuring equipment reliability, and driving efficiency across plant operations. The position plays a vital role in maintaining safety compliance and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance & Equipment Management
- Lead the Preventive Maintenance Program and troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic issues on corrugator, flexographic, and rotary die-cutting systems.
- Guide repair, refurbishment, installation, and commissioning of compaction and production equipment.
- Execute predictive diagnostics using thermal imaging, vibration analysis, and alignment assessments.
- Support automation and instrumentation upgrades, using RS-Logix 500, Step 7, Lenze software, and other platforms.
Supervisory & Operational Leadership
- Recruit, train, and supervise maintenance and engineering staff.
- Oversee daily operations and provide performance evaluations.
- Partner with manufacturing leadership to establish priorities and streamline workflows.
- Support capital projects, renovations, and vendor coordination for plant upgrades.
Tooling & Engineering Oversight
- Direct tooling operations ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards.
- Conduct system assessments and guide proactive improvements using SAP PM modules.
- Monitor energy quality and boiler systems for maximum operational efficiency.
Budget & Compliance
- Develop and manage the department budget using SAP Financials.
- Maintain regulatory compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other health/safety guidelines.
- Collaborate with the Health & Safety Committee to develop maintenance-related risk assessments.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Strong leadership and hands-on troubleshooting experience in industrial environments.
- In-depth knowledge of plant engineering, corrugated paper equipment, and manufacturing processes.
- Ability to perform equipment diagnostics and implement cost-effective maintenance solutions.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, SAP, AutoCAD, and maintenance scheduling software.
- Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering.
- 5+ years of engineering maintenance experience in the corrugated paper packaging industry.
- 5+ years of supervisory experience preferred.
- Experience with predictive maintenance, tooling, and budget management required.
