JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Customs Specialist ensures full compliance with customs regulations and oversees complex import/export operations. This role leads the preparation and review of customs documentation, manages relationships with customs brokers and authorities, and supports internal teams in international trade matters. The Senior Customs Specialist also identifies process improvements, ensures adherence to applicable trade laws, and provides guidance on tariff classification, duty minimization, and customs procedures.
JOB RESPONSIBILITY
· Oversee and ensure compliance with all customs regulations for import and export activities.
· Prepare, review, and submit accurate customs documentation and declarations.
· Classify products according to the Harmonized System (HS) and apply correct duty rates.
· Coordinate with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and government authorities.
· Monitor changes in customs laws and ensure internal procedures are updated accordingly.
· Resolve issues related to customs holds, inspections, and documentation discrepancies.
· Advise internal departments on trade compliance, tariffs, and import/export restrictions.
· Maintain and audit customs records in accordance with legal requirements.
· Identify opportunities for duty savings and process optimization.
· Train and mentor junior customs or logistics staff on compliance best practices.
INTERNAL & EXTERNAL INTERFACE
1. External:
· Customs Authorities: Maintain direct communication to ensure compliance and resolve issues.
· Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders: Manage service quality and documentation accuracy.
· Regulatory Agencies: Ensure compliance with trade regulations (e.g., trade agreements, restricted goods).
· Suppliers/Vendors: Align on invoice accuracy and shipping documents.
· Auditors (internal/external): Support in customs audits and investigations.
2. Internal:
· Logistics: Coordinate import/export schedules and documentation flow.
· Procurement: Ensure accurate information for vendor shipments and customs declarations.
· Finance: Align on duties, taxes, and compliance-related costs.
· Legal/Compliance: Collaborate on audits and regulatory updates.
· Warehouse/Receiving: Coordinate on customs inspections and goods release.
· Management: Report on trade compliance metrics and risks.
Requirements.
- Minimum 5–7 years of experience in customs operations, international trade, or import/export compliance.
- In-depth knowledge of customs regulations, trade compliance, and HS tariff classification.
Strong understanding of import/export procedures and international shipping documentation.
Familiarity with free trade agreements, duty drawback, and bonded operations.
Proficiency in customs systems and tools (e.g., SAT, VUCEM, or similar platforms).
Advanced Excel skills and experience with ERP/logistics platforms.
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
Excellent attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
- Effective communication skills in English and Spanish (as applicable).
- Conversational / Intermediate English
