Digital Control Systems Designer
LOCATION:
Querétaro, Mexico
The Position
As a Digital Control Systems Designer, you will design, develop, and optimize cutting-edge control systems for next-generation underground mining vehicles. Working within the TAC division, you will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver smart operator assists, advanced collision avoidance (CAS Level Nine), and ISO-13849 compliant architectures. This is an exciting opportunity to apply your technical skills and creativity to solve complex challenges in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
The Control Systems Team is driving the design and buildout of a digital controls platform across more than 30 vehicle product lines. You will play a key role in developing new features and advancing the next-generation operating system for mobile equipment.
Responsibilities and Duties
Technical Responsibilities:
- Program mobile equipment using low variability PLC languages such as CODESYS.
- Apply systems engineering best practices to optimize control system performance.
- Implement CAN protocols (CAN Open, J1939) for effective communication within vehicle systems.
- Design vehicle sensor instrumentation and architecture, ensuring compliance with ISO-13849.
- Evaluate and integrate devices from suppliers such as IFM, ABB, and various ECUs (I/O modules, controllers, displays).
Tools and Software:
- ?Use AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar tools to create and modify technical drawings, schematics, and control system network layouts.
Qualifications
- Advanced English (verbal and written) required; proficiency in other languages is an asset.
- Minimum 5 years of engineering experience in mechatronics, electrical engineering, software development, control systems, or related fields.
- Demonstrated experience with the responsibilities and duties described above.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, computer science, or a related field (asset).
- Professional Engineer (P Eng) license or similar certification (asset).
- Experience with legacy systems such as Danfoss is considered an asset.
First Year Goals
- Learn the current and future state of core underground mining product line control systems.
- Advance the design and implementation of a new CAN bus control product with new top-level architecture for two vehicle application types (e.g., Rockbreaker).
- Implement features like CAS Level Nine and remote/autonomous control in electrical schematics and PLC software for battery electric and diesel vehicle classes.
- Execute electrical designs and gain hands-on experience through rapid prototyping and system/subsystem validation — including building hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test benches and fully integrated electro-hydraulic vehicle control systems on first-of-their-class builds.
