RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and implement innovative optical concepts for automotive headlamps and signal lighting that combine manufacturability, modularity, style, cost effectiveness, and robust performance characteristics. Support development of intellectual property via Concept Development Process.
- Perform early Optical Feasibility and Package Development in support of customer vehicle programs. Support customer quotations and deliverables for project milestones.
- Oversee and collaborate with global optical engineering resources for delivery of specific tasks and projects. Collaborate with global PO Lighting optics community to continuously improve our design and analysis methods.
- Optimize optical designs by performing design/analysis with extensive utilization of lighting CAE tools and empirical data as needed. Optimize optical designs for the best lit & unlit lamp appearance.
- Support component testing to evaluate photometric performance. Provide risk analysis and design changes for current- and new-model lamps. Provide assistance as required to support program deliverables.
- Support Component Testing, Certification, and Homologation in compliance with the PO Lighting Product Development System.
- Support Prototype build and launch activities, particularly in the areas of Lit Appearance, Fit & Finish, and Beam Pattern optimization. Participate in Benchmarking activities and Night Drives to assure maximum customer satisfaction.
- Help maintain laboratory workspace. Organize lab supplies and equipment. Assist in calibration and correlation studies. Develop new methods for more efficient testing and analysis.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT(S):
- Minimum BS degree required in a relevant engineering discipline with a concentration in optics preferred
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT(S):
- Minimum of 3-5 years' experience with design of automotive lighting optical systems and components, with working knowledge of FMVSS-108, ECE, and SAE requirements
- Must be comfortable with principles of Geometrical Optics for illumination.
- Candidate should have familiarity of common automotive light sources including halogen, arc discharge, and solid state sources including high power LEDs.
- Knowledge of lighting manufacturing processes and practices including tool making, injection molding, metallization, lamp assembly, and photometric testing and headlamp aiming techniques is preferred.
- Experience with CAD software is required. Prefer experience with CatiaV5.
- Experience with optical simulation software such as ASAP, Lucidshape or equivalent is strongly desired.
- Candidate should be familiar with using lab equipment, creating and testing optical mockups, and evaluating photometric performance.
- Must have good communication skills and work well with cross-functional teams.
- Must be able to learn quickly and communicate ideas to peers and management.
- Must have strong PC computer skills.
