About the role
A Java Software Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining Java-based solutions for Building Automation Systems. This individual will work on a wide range of Java development tasks, focusing on Building Automation controllers. The role requires a deep understanding of core Java programming including optimization of performance and memory usage. The ideal candidate possesses strong problem-solving skills, a passion for innovation, and an ability to create scalable and maintainable software solutions.
In this role, you will be involved in key phases of development, from project planning and implementation to testing and deployment, ensuring that the software meets the performance and functional requirements of our products. You will also contribute to advancing our product offerings and supporting legacy systems by providing expert-level product knowledge.
Key Responsibilities:
As a Senior Java Software Engineer, you'll be responsible for:
Develop and maintain Java-based solutions using Agile methodologies.
Write and maintain Java software that will run in a building automation controller.
Participate in project planning by investigating solutions to system challenges and providing accurate estimates.
Collaborate with hardware and systems engineering teams to ensure smooth integration with embedded hardware components.
Ensure that the software meets timing and performance requirements.
Use test-driven development (TDD) methodologies to write unit and functional tests, ensuring quality and reliability.
Debug and resolve software / hardware / firmware interaction issues using diagnostic tools and methodologies.
Requirements

As a minimum you must have:
BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field required.
Strong Java and object-oriented programming skills.
Experience in Java-based memory management and optimization in resource-constrained environments.
Experience ensuring that software meets timing and performance requirements.
Although not necessary, it would be nice if you have:
Certifications or coursework related to embedded systems development.
Experience with Linux environments.
Communication protocol experience with Ethernet, IP, BACnet, Modbus, N2 and/or other serial protocols.
Experience in Test-Driven Development (TDD) and unit/functional testing in Java.
Experience with Gradle, Maven, or other build systems for Java.
Familiarity with Java debugging tools.
Experience optimizing Java performance, including use of a Java profiler.
Experience working in an Agile/Scrum development process.
Experience with software lifecycle management including version control, build processes, release management
Controls System Design Experience (HVAC control systems a plus)
