Job Description

What's the Role?

We are looking for an Android engineer to join the Etsy mobile app foundations team to build platform capabilities and enable Etsy app engineers to build confidently with modern and consistent tools and practices.

As the Android software development Engineer, you'll participate in implementing solutions that enables multiple product teams, across initiatives, to collaborate within the same codebase. If you're a platform-minded Android Engineer that loves working towards enabling other engineers to get their job done more easily, this could be the perfect match.

This is a full-time position reporting to Android Foundations Sr Engineering Manager. What's this team like at Etsy?

• Android Foundations works across teams to introduce tooling, modern architectural patterns, and development practices that enable other Android engineers at Etsy to build faster and with more confidence.
• We work closely with product teams to understand their engineering challenges, needs, and desires. We also work directly with other platform teams to ensure we're building with a cohesive vision across the board.
• The nature of our work requires us to think outside the box, and to look for novel solutions to interesting problems. We learn from standard industry practices, but we also don't shy away from trying new technologies to accomplish our needs. For instance, our team recently introduced a new build system to Etsy, which enables engineers to build modularly and faster.

What does the day-to-day look like?

• Contribute to the Android platform strategy across our family of apps.
• Work with Product Engineering and Enablement Engineering teams to shape what is possible on our platform to engage and enable our app developers.
• Assist with technical discovery and communicate findings and recommendations to your team members.
• Work with Android engineers on other teams to improve the Etsy app alongside Android Platform Engineering improvements.
• Participate in code reviews and project planning discussions.
• Troubleshoot and monitor critical systems.

Qualifications

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

• At least 2 years of professional Android development experience.
• Self-motivation in tackling projects, and you estimate accurate timelines for tasks to deliver work at a steady, predictable pace to hit deadlines.
• Proficiency in Kotlin and /or Java.
• A talent for debugging familiar code or systems easily, and interest in debugging unfamiliar code.
• Experience collaborating with product managers, designers, quality assurance, and other engineers.
• Experience with version control & shipping code efficiently.
• Experience with unit testing.
• Can collaborate with other engineers to solve unconstrained problems
• Love to, and can, learn new systems and technologies.
• Are comfortable collaborating closely with product managers and designers, providing estimates or product ideas that will influence your team's roadmap.
• Are interested in monitoring the health and performance of the applications your team owns.
• Are a believer in automated testing as a way to create great, stable products
• Have a "leave it better than you found it" mentality, and are willing to work with and improve on code you did not originally write.
• Lead in and/or work with others in tackling debugging.
• Will be a mindful, transparent, and communicative member of your team.
