Summary:
The Database Administrator 2 is a vital member of our IT team, responsible for the robust administration, maintenance, and optimization of our database systems, primarily focusing on PostgreSQL and SQL Server environments. This role involves ensuring high performance, availability, and security of critical data, as well as collaborating with development teams to support application needs. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise in database management, a deep understanding of index theory, and a proactive approach to troubleshooting and continuous improvement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Database Administration:
Perform installation, configuration, and ongoing maintenance of PostgreSQL and SQL Server database servers.
Proactively monitor database performance, availability, and capacity, identifying and addressing potential issues before they impact operations.
Implement and manage robust security strategies to protect sensitive data, ensuring compliance with internal policies and external regulations.
Manage user accounts, roles, and permissions within database systems, adhering to the principle of least privilege.
Actively troubleshoot and optimize database performance issues, including query tuning, identifying bottlenecks, and resource management.
Database Development Support:
Collaborate closely with development teams in the design of efficient and scalable database schemas for new applications and features.
Write, review, and optimize complex SQL queries for applications and reporting purposes.
Implement and maintain stored procedures and functions to enhance database functionality and performance.
Maintenance & Reliability:
Implement and manage comprehensive backup and recovery strategies to ensure data durability and rapid restoration in case of data loss or system failures.
Ensure the integrity and consistency of data through regular checks and maintenance routines.
Apply necessary software patches, updates, and upgrades to database systems, minimizing downtime and mitigating vulnerabilities.
Document all database processes, configurations, and changes, maintaining clear and current records.
Index Optimization:
Conduct in-depth analysis and design of indexes to significantly improve query performance across various applications.
Implement and maintain effective indexing strategies, regularly reviewing their impact.
Perform table reindexing and other maintenance tasks to optimize database space and performance.
Policy & Standards Adherence:
Contribute to the formulation and monitoring of policies, procedures, and standards relating to database management.
Propose and implement enhancements that will improve the overall performance and reliability of database systems.
Collaboration & Consultation:
Work effectively in a team environment, collaborating with other IT professionals, developers, and business stakeholders.
Provide consultation and technical expertise to users regarding database capabilities and best practices.
May work in conjunction with professional services and outsourcing functions.
Requirements:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or a related field.
Experience: Minimum 2-4 years of experience as a Database Administrator, with strong hands-on experience in both PostgreSQL and SQL Server environments.
Technical Knowledge:
Strong experience in PostgreSQL and SQL Server database administration, including installation, configuration, and troubleshooting.
Deep knowledge of SQL (Structured Query Language) and common database administration tools.
Proven experience in database performance optimization and advanced troubleshooting.
Solid understanding of database security concepts and implementation.
Deep understanding of index theory and its practical application in PostgreSQL and SQL Server.
Experience creating, managing, and optimizing indexes.

Ability to work effectively in a team and communicate clearly and effectively with both technical and non-technical staff.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
