Job Description
About Us
We are a former start-up (Opower) that was acquired by Oracle in 2016 but kept our start-up energy and atmosphere. We use utility data and behavioral science to help people save energy through a comprehensive product suite across various communication channels and a modern web platform. Our group, the Demand Side Management (DSM) organization, is focused on building products that educate our customers about their energy, water, or other utility usage via our machine-learning driven insights and nudge customers to become more efficient and flexible with their usage. These products have saved over 31 Terawatt-Hours of electricity and avoided 15.2 million metric tons of carbon in our atmosphere! Our products need to continue to scale to serve even more customers and provide increased flexibility with the communications we send. These represent big challenges that will require critical thinking and innovative engineering. We are very mission driven and are looking for an engineer who shares this mission to join our team!
Job Description
Our big plans and the constantly changing business landscape requires our team think not just as engineers, but to communicate and collaborate with business stakeholders throughout the organization.
To that end, we are looking for a junior full stack developer who is excited about building software that makes a difference for the world that we live in and has the skills to write code in our stack and to think critically about our role in the business.
Sometimes, that'll require digging deep into our existing codebases and libraries; sometimes, that means working with other parts of the organization to reason about our business goals and where our engineering work fits in. Our solutions are sometimes large-scale projects that require coordinated engineering efforts across the organization, and sometimes just a few lines of code (or maybe nothing at all). If you agree with this way of approaching work as a software engineer, then you're someone we'd love to talk to!
Our frontend stack is based heavily on Javascript, NodeJS, and React, communicating with our GraphQL and REST API backend that's primarily Java, Dropwizard, and MySQL. If you have experience with those technologies, that's a plus.
Responsibilities
Design, develop, troubleshoot and debug software programs for databases, applications, tools, networks etc.
As a member of the software engineering division, you will apply basic to intermediate knowledge of software architecture to perform software development tasks associated with developing, debugging or designing software applications according to provided design specifications. You will build enhancements within an existing software architecture and occasionally suggest improvements to the architecture.
Duties and tasks are standard with some variation; displays understanding of roles, processes and procedures. Performs moderately complex problem solving with assistance and guidance in understanding and applying company policies and processes. BS degree or equivalent experience relevant. 1 year+ of software engineering or related experience.
